Like most wood bird feeders however, the birds feet eventually chip away and sand down the edges of the feeder. But this will take a few years at least, and frankly, I like to imagine the softer feel of wood under foot gives the birds a sure footing, much like they’re used to up in the trees.

However, if you have a good vantage point to watch the birds, this is an excellent feeder. It’s a metal feeder which means it won’t be prone to the wear and tear of the bird’s feet on wood like the other feeders on this list. However, the ground feeder also puts birds at risk. Make sure you don’t have a cat, and your neighbor’s cat isn’t around when you put this feeder out. House cats are the greatest risk to the bird population.

The last feeder on our list, and our ultimate favorite is the Woodlink 3 in 1 Platform Bird Feeder Tray. This bird feeder tray is the largest feeder on our list at 16.38” x 13.25”. Though it looks much like the other wood trays, this feeder has a few additional features we like.

First, it’s versatile. It can be installed hanging from a tree limb much like the other bird feeder trays on the list, but that’s not all. It can also be mounted on a fixed pole. The bird feeder tray can also be a ground feeder if that’s what you’d like it to be.

Additionally, one of our favorite features are the accessories which are available. You can buy a ground mount polewith auger and pre-made squirrel baffleto perfectly fit this feeder. You’d be surprised how frustrating pole mounting a bird feeder can be, but the Woodlink 3 in 1 makes it a cinch. This is a more expensive option for sure. However, if you weigh it against how many times you’ll watch the birds feed and over how many years you expect the feeder to last, it may be a good investment for you.
Bird Feeder Tray Summary
The one thing to remember if you’re having trouble deciding on a bird feeder. Having a bird feeder is better than no bird feeder. If you can’t decide, just buy the least expensive one, put it up and enjoy the bird show. If you don’t have a tree to mount the feeder, you have two choices.
