When you’re entertaining on a back patio or deck, it feels incredible. Bringing family and friends together in an outdoor space is one of the great joys in life.  In summer you’ll consider a sun shade or a pergola to shield you from the sun. Once Fall comes you’ll likely begin to consider how to keep the outdoor space livable.  You can put in a fire pit, but without natural gas or propane, that requires effort every time you use it.  Instead, you should consider a Mosaic propane patio heater.

What Is A Mosaic Propane Patio Heater?

A Mosaic propane patio heater has the familiar shape you’ve seen for years.  These were the first patio heaters you saw show up at restaurant patios and outdoor spaces years ago.  These heaters have a burner set high up with a shroud which directs the heat downward and out.

Mosaic propane patio heaters have been around restaurants for quite some time. However, they’ve recently become popular for home use. After all, they’re simple to use, work well in smaller spaces like a patio and aren’t too expensive.

Best Mosaic Propane Patio Heater This Year

We call them Mosaic propane patio heaters, but in reality we don’t even recommend the Mosaic version anymore.  The Amazon Basics version is less expensive and provides similar heating capacity.

What To Look For In A Mosaic Propane Patio Heater

Some of the features to look for in a patio heater are basic convenience features. Other features are strictly for safety. We made a definitive list of criteria that every mosaic propane patio heater should have. Whichever heater you choose, hold it to these standards.

40k Or More BTUs

First, you should be looking for a heater with 40,000 BTUs or more.  BTU’s refer to the British Thermal Units and are a measure of how much gas is burned over an hour.  This is a rough measurement of how much heat these will pump out, and in our experience 40,000 is about what you’ll need in most instances with a Mosaic propane patio heater style.

Heater With Wheels

Next, look for a mosaic propane patio heater heater with wheels.  You may think you’ll be permanently locating this heater in one spot or another.  However, you’ll soon find out it’s very convenient to be able to roll the heater into a different spot depending on what you’re doing in the outdoor space.  Keep in mind however, you only want to relocate these heaters when they have been off for enough time to cool down.

Safety Shut Off

The next feature to look for is a safety shut off.  Nearly every propane patio heater is going to have a safety shut off of some sort.  However, we always open the access door and shut off the propane at the tank when not in use.  This may seem like overkill to some, but it’s quick and easy insurance for keeping your Mosaic propane patio heater from leaking propane.

The safety shut off however, is a feature which automatically shuts the propane off if the heater were to blow over.  This is a feature which helps protect you if a wind gust comes up or a clumsy friend knocks the heater over.  Even though the heater is knocked over and shut off, it’s a good idea to still reach in and shut the tank valve off first thing.

Pro Tips On How To Use A Propane Patio Heater

All propane patio heaters accept the standard 20 pound propane tank you buy for an outdoor grill.  This makes install and changing the tank out very simple.  We would suggest buying an extra tank to keep on hand for when your tank runs out of propane.  Not having an extra tank can be one of the most frustrating aspects of owning a propane heater.  Undoubtedly, the one time you have 8 people sitting down for dinner on a cool fall evening, that’ll be the time the heater runs out.

If you want your heater to last, you can always add a heater cover.  Obviously, these should only be installed when you’ve let the heater cool down completely and shut the propane off.

Mosaic Propane Patio Heater Summary

Hopefully, this has helped you understand what to look for when shopping for a Mosaic propane patio heater.  In our opinion, once you’ve taken the plunge and added a propane patio heater to your outdoor living, you’ll wonder why you hadn’t done it sooner.  Spending time outdoors with a patio heater there to cut the chill down and make it comfortable is one of the true joys in modern outdoor living.

Follow our criteria for choosing your mosaic propane patio heater. If your heater has 40,000+ BTUs, wheels on the bottom and a safety shut off, you’ve made a good choice. Then it just comes down to the square footage that you want your heater to cover. The larger the area, the more expensive. However, as mosaic propane patio heaters become more popular residentially, the prices also balance out.
